Local Fishing

San Diego fish report for may 19th 

 I’ve had a couple of trips from the La Jolla area up into the north county looking for Calico bass and have done quite well.  La Jolla is producing more Bass and Bonito now for me than anywhere in the north county. The Bass in La Jolla have all been concentrated higher in the kelp.  With the kelp as vast as it is this year the fish seem to be much more spread out not just concentrated in areas . La Jolla went off A few times over the last month. The yellows and White Sea bass have been slower with a few being caught now and then. According to local divers the White Sea bass are all over. We just have to wait for them to bite. The Coronado islands are still fishing good for Bonito and some yellows.  This is a great time to get out of The office and avoid the crowds in between storms. To find yellowtail in areas where you normally haven’t fished look for current breaks scum lines and temperature breaks along sharp inclines in the continental shelf. 

San Diego bay

San Diego bay water temps are up. The south bay has water temps to about 70° and rising. The back bay has now started to fish very good with cleaner water being the reason. The front of the bay is even better with water temps from 64 to 68°.  The bass fishing in the bay has been phenomenal over the last month.  Some Barracuda and and Bonito are still being caught in the front of the bay where the current is strongest. Bonefish have shown up with better numbers and seem to be being caught Near the bridge. Zuniga jetty on both the north and south side has been fishing very good for calico bass and sand bass.  Over the last two weeks I have seen the occasional breaking Bonito around the bridge in the deeper portions of the channel.  The point Loma kelp seems to be the most consistent spot for big calico’s with La Jolla kelp being a good second.

The water temps are up from 64 to 68 degrees

 Start to Look for Halibut in the deep  holes and structure areas around. If you want to know how and where to go give us a call or come on in to the shop we have many shop employees that have fished for Halibut and know the secret’s to catching these fish.  Surf Perch are now coming in closer and closer all the time with those storms we have had they’re looking for that meal that's exposed from the waves.  Most of the fish are still out in deeper water where longer casts are the way to catch them consitantly.  Many reports are coming in about good numbers of Leopards around so don't leave the larger rod behind.                                                                               

Cabo & Baja

 We have been invaded by a fleet of commercial purse seine boats since the first of May. They have taken large volumes of yellowfin and some striped marlin and sharks from the grounds near Cabo, leaving us with highly reduced catches. We are working on the problem thru channels,  back off,but the seiners will likely come back if the tuna schools stack up here again this summer.Striped marlin fishing is still decent and the top boat in the currently running world billfish release tournament  caught and released 14 marlin yesterday. Water is warm early at 82 degrees off the east side, and there are some nice dorado coming in already.A few Wahoo are being caught east from port. Our hope is that the warm current trend will stay strong, and that Blue Marlin will show up in July this summer. Best, Tony
